Select and carry out calculations in the correct order of precedence using the ‘rules’ of BODMAS (Brackets first then Other then Division then Multiplication then Addition and finally Subtraction).

Calculate: \(3 \times (7 - 3)\)
In this question, we have a bracket, a subtraction and a multiplication.
BODMAS tells us that brackets come first, so we calculate:
\(3 \times (7 - 3) = 3 \times 4 = 12\)
Calculate \(2 + 3 \times 5 - 4\)
Did you get 13? If not, remember that multiplication comes before addition and subtraction, so we have:
\(2 + 3 \times 5 - 4\)
\(= 2 + 15 - 4 = 13\)
Paula says that \(2 \times 3 - 2 \times 5 = - 4\)
Steve says the answer is \(10\). Who is right, and why?
Paula is correct. Multiplication comes before addition and subtraction, so:
\(2 \times 3 - 2 \times 5 = 6 - 10 = - 4\)
Calculate \({(15 - 3 \times 2)^2}\)
\({(15 - 3 \times 2)^2}\)
\(= {(15 - 6)^2}\)
\(= {(9)^2} = 81\)
Put brackets into this equation to make it work \(4 \times 5 - 3 = 8\)
\(4 \times (5 - 3) = 8\)
Put symbols and brackets into this equation to make it work \(7\,5\,3 = 6\)
\((7\, - 5)\, \times 3 = 6\)
