Crew members have put out a fire on a ship carrying timber off the Cornish coast.

A Royal Navy aircraft, from RNAS Culdrose near Helston, was sent to the cargo ship after coastguards received a distress call just after 1400 GMT.

The 13,500-ton Sena Deniz reported it had a fire in its engine room when it was 15 miles north west of Newquay.

Two of the 24 personnel on board were airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Treliske, Truro, after receiving minor injuries.

The fire was put out by the crew who doused the hold with carbon dioxide.

As well as the navy helicopter, the Padstow and St Ives lifeboats made their way to the vessel.

Another helicopter, from RAF Chivenor in north Devon, took two firefighters from Falmouth to the ship.

They brought thermal imaging equipment to monitor the temperature of the engine room and ensure the area is safe.

The incident was co-ordinated by Falmouth Coastguard station.
