Fairy mural toilet wins top award
Sharon Wilson's woodland and animal scenes decorate the women's toilets

An artist's murals of fairytales and railways on the walls of public toilets have won a Loo of the Year Award.

Sharon Wilson decorated the Ladies at a woodland park in Gwynedd with fairyland forest scenes, with trains painted in the Gents.

Gypsy Wood Park near Caernarfon, which opened in 2005, won the award in the theme park category.

Owner Chris Evans said she was "very proud" of the honour, in the first year the park had entered the competition.

She said spending a penny at the park's toilets had become an added attraction for the park's 25,000 visitors.

'Full-time job'

"It is unusual and we get artist Sharon Wilson to come back each year to add an extra bit," she said.

Looking after the facilities is a "full-time" job according to Maureen Naylor.

"I check them all day, but it is worth it because people really enjoy visiting them," she said.

"Even the men have a look at the Ladies, comparing the two.

"It's important to have clean toilets because it gives a good impression about the rest of the park," she added.

Nearly 1,500 entries were received for the 2007 awards across 57 separate categories.

Other north Wales winners in 2007 included Denbighshire County Council for best public toilets, Corwen for most accessible toilets and Rhyl Station in Denbighshire for being most family friendly.

Winners of the award are chosen by an inspector who marks loos on a range of criteria including decor, fixtures, and overall standards of cleanliness.
