The famous train will mark the anniversary |
The legendary Flying Scotsman will roll in to Scarborough on Tuesday to help celebrate the 160th anniversary of the town's rail link to York. Staff in Victorian costume will be on board the Doncaster-built locomotive as its sets off on the 42-mile trip.
The line brought the first tourists to Scarborough, establishing it as one of England's premier seaside destinations.
Its opening in 1845 has been described as one of the most important events in the town's history.
Like his predecessor 160 years ago, Scarborough Mayor Derek Bastiam will be at Scarborough station to greet the passengers.
"It (the rail line) has been the backbone of our tourist economy for 160 years following the arrival of the first holidaymakers, bringing generations of visitors to enjoy all the town has to offer," he said.
The 1205 BST Flying Scotsman trip will re-live the inaugural holidaymakers' steam trip to Scarborough.
