Coastal heritage project opened

A 500,000 coastal reclamation project, which was damaged by vandals earlier this year, has been officially opened.

The project, near the former colliery site at Dawdon in County Durham, has seen the installation of new paths, seating and artworks.

In March, feature boulders were ripped from settings and steps damaged by off-road vehicles.

The site was formally opened by Dr Helen Phillips, chief executive of Natural England.

Much of the cash for the project came from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The area, near the former Dawdon Colliery and Seaham Harbour Railhead, offers spectacular views northwards to the Port of Seaham and south across Blast Beach, making it one of the most dramatic viewing points on the coast.
