Residents took to the streets to protest about the closures last year

Scarborough Council closed Scalby's toilet - and several others - two years ago in a bid to save up to �86,000.

But villagers said they were well used by visitors and elderly residents and protested against the move by marching down Scalby High Street waving potties.

The facility has now reopened after the village's Sweet Pee committee raised enough money to run them for a year.

Kate Newton, from the committee, said: "We have cleaned them up and repainted them and washed all the tiles down.

"They were originally built to a very high standard, because of course this is part of a conservation area, so we want to make sure that we keep them that way."

While the toilets were closed, the committee said people used the nearby bus shelter and churchyard as an alternative.

Now its members will have to raise �4,500 each year to keep the facility open.

An "honesty box" is to be put up so people who use the toilets can make a donation towards their upkeep and operational costs.
