A policeman in the northern Nigerian state of Bauchi was gunned down last night by assailants thought to have been on motorcycles.

This comes as tensions are on the increase in the city of Maiduguri in nearby Borno state - the site last year of fighting between security forces and an Islamist sect, Boko Haram that left seven hundred dead.

Since then there have been a number of incidents involving suspected members of the sect - including a prison break in September and an attempt to burn down a police station earlier this week.

BBC Hausa Service reporter Is'haq Khalid has been monitoring events from the city of Jos, he spoke to Network Africa's Paul Bakibinga.
