In Guinea, a split has emerged among members of the electoral commission casting a shadow over the crucial presidential run-off poll due in less than a fortnight.

Hopes for a smooth second round were scuppered when, yesterday, the day that campaigning resumed, a faction of Guinea's Independent Electoral Commission (CENI) signed a petition calling on the authorities to replace the newly elected chairman of the commission, Lonceni Camara.

They want a fresh election for the chairmanship to be organised.

Twelve of the 22 members of the commission who signed the petition include some senior officials.

BBC Network Africa's Conakry reporter Alhassan Sillah attended their press conference.
