Kenya's President Mwai Kibaki has signed into law a new constitution that was passed at the beginning of this month.
The new document reduces presidential powers, increases civil liberties and introduces a devolved government.
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Nairobi's Uhuru park to witness the event, which included gun salutes and a grand military parade.
The BBC's Anne Waithera was there.
