Tension is growing in the Abyei region of Sudan after clashes this week left five people dead.

A local official says the violence is intended to de-stabilise the region just ahead of next year's referendum on independence for Southern Sudan.

Abyei sits between former civil war enemies in the north and south, both sides lay claim to the region.

BBC Network Africa's Peter Martell sent this report from the Southern capital, Juba.
