At an urgent meeting called in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, leaders from east African countries repeated their plea for the United Nations to convert the AU force in Somalia into a UN mission.
IGAD wants an 'urgent' and 'robust' response from the international community to continuing instability in Somalia.
In the meantime, IGAD has agreed to stregthen the AU force by 2000 troops.
The BBC's Uduak Amimo caught up with Somalia's foreign minister, Yusuf Hassan Ibrahim, and asked him whether he was happy with the meeting's outcome.
