The presidential election coming up in Burundi later this month was thrown into chaos today when five main opposition contenders pulled out of the race.
In May, they demanded that the electoral commission resign from presiding over local elections, which President Nkurunziza's governing party won.
They allege that the polls were fraudulent.
These are the first elections since all Burundian rebel groups gave up their arms and transformed into civilian political parties.
