The challenges facing Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan are numerous:

  • He has just completed vetting candidates to be his vice president.
  • He has to prepare for next year's elections which he has vowed will be free and fair.
  • The chairman of his party the governing People's Democratic Party, has just resigned after facing charges of corruption.

And today Mr Jonathan is is set to make his first official visit, as president, to the volatile Niger Delta region.

There are fears that an amnesty process initiated by his predecessor may be unravelling.

Partly because of its vast oil reserves and partly because he hails from the region, President Jonathan's visit is already generating a lot of interest as the BBC's Fidelis Mbah reports.
