Nine hundred thousand Mauritians are at the polls today to elect a new government.

The choice is between the incumbent Prime Minister Ramgoolam of the Social Alliance and former leader Paul Berenger of the Mauritius Miilitant Movement.

Ethnicity is a key issue for voters with Berenger standing to break the dominance of Hindus who have held power over the multi-racial society made up of Creoles, Muslims, Chinese and French for most of the four decades since independence.

The BBC's Leevy Frivet has been visiting polling stations and spoke to Network Africa's Bola Mosuro.
