Nigeria's acting president, Goodluck Jonathan has made good on his promise to set the ball rolling in ensuring free and fair elections are held in 2011.
In a major move he has removed the the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Maurice Iwu.
Iwu is a controversial figure who has been criticised for his handling of Nigeria's 2007 elections.
Not all the recommendations of a committee on electoral reform led by Justice Mohammed Uwais have been accepted by Nigeria's House of Assembly and this led to concerns that the acting president's hands would be tied over making true reforms.
The BBC's Abuja correspondent Chris Ewokor told Network Africa's Peter Ndoro what had been announced.
