Leading Muslim clerics in Nigeria say they met ailing president, Umaru Yar'Adua, at his official residence last night.

It is the first time anyone outside his family has spoken of seeing him for many months.

The head of state has been seriously ill since last November and has not been seen in public since then.

His absence from office created political turmoil, prompting the country's National Assembly to recognise his vice president, Goodluck Jonathan, as acting president.

Dr Ibrahim Datti Ahmed is the Chairman of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria and led the delegation to see the president.

Earlier he spoke to Focus on Africa's Chakuchanya Harawa.
