Hundreds of people have been made homeless today in Mogadishu, after the police and the army started destroying a shantytown near the city airport.

The Somali authorities argue the demolition is necessary because the slum area harbours armed islamic militants who pose a threat to the airport.

The operation is supposed to carry on for the next two days.

This report is by the Focus on Africa's Mohammed Olad Hassan.
