Kenya is trying to get its elections right after the 2007 poll ended in bloodshed, with around 1,500 people killed in post-election violence.
And the first thing to get right is the electoral register.
Today the country's much awaited voters' registration process kicked off.
The fresh registration of voters and the creation of a new voters register is due to last for a month and a half.
Initially the registration will be done manually in all constituencies and electronic registration will take place in a few pilot constituencies to test its effectiveness.
The Interim Independent Electoral Commission intends to register some 10 million Kenyans ahead of a constitutional referendum later this year and general elections in 2012.
The BBC's Anne Mawathe attended the official launch of the exercise in Nairobi.
