Counting of ballot papers has begun following yesterday's Presidential polls in Togo.

The voting appears to have gone largely smoothly although there were a number of irregularities reported.

At the back of the minds of the voters would no doubt have been the violence that followed a disputed election 5 years ago, in which hundreds of Togolese perished.

Incumbent president Faure Gnassingbe of the Rally of the Togolese People (RPT) is facing six other candidates, including his main challenger Jean - Pierre Fabre of the opposition Union of Forces for Change.
