Polls for Togo's presidential elections opened peacefully this morning.

Seven candidates are in the running, including the current head of state, Faure Gnassingbe.

This is the first presidential poll since 2005, when hundreds of Togolese died after violence erupted.

Electoral observers are in the country to monitor the process and reports suggest that things are going smoothly.

Focus on Africa's Peter Ndoro spoke to the BBC correspondent in Lome, Ebow Godwin.
