The government in Chad has agreed to an extension of the mandate for UN peacekeepers on its border with Darfur.

The force, known as Minurcat, had been due to leave in mid March and Chadian president, Idriss Deby Itno had earlier made it clear he was not happy about an extension to their mandate, describing them as a failure.

However the United Nations was concerned that refugees in the volatile east of the country would suffer if the force was withdrawn.
