To Niger where its just over 10 days since the retired Lieutenant Colonel turned civilian ruler Mamadou Tanja was overthrown in a military coup.

Since then, despite a military head of state being installed, there have been several communiques issued by the military junta which goes by the lofty title of the Supreme Council for the Restoration of Democracy (CSRD).

But not a word from the man at the top.

Well last night the military head of state addressed the nation via television for the first time.

Squadron leader Major Salou Djibo, among other things, laid out his plans for the transition period.

And it looks like career politicians need not apply to be part of his government.

Paul Bakibinga spoke to Idy Baraou in Niamey who watched the address.
