A peace deal between the Sudanese government and one of Darfur's biggest rebel groups has been signed in the Gulf state of Qatar.

The leader of JEM, Khalil Ibrahim, promised that his men would lay down their weapons and begin a ceasefire with immediate effect.

For its part the Sudanese government has said that it will bring the Darfur rebel movement into a power sharing agreement, and that rebel fighters will be assimilated into the Sudanese army and police force.

The historic deal also promises that people displaced by the long-running conflict in Darfur will be given compensation.

From Qatar's capital, Doha, Stephanie Hancock reports.
