Residents of a village in northern Tanzania have been in a state of shock and disbelief following the murder of seventeen people from three families last night.

Armed with machetes, the killers attacked men and women; one of those who died was an eleven month old baby.

The Mara region, where the incident took place, is prone to clan clashes, mostly caused by conflicts over land or cattle.

Focus on Africa's John Ngayoma in Dar-es-Salaam sent this report.
