The Somali transitional federal government has received medical aid from the United States, ahead of an expected military offensive by government forces on the rebel controlled areas.

As this was happening lives were still being lost as more violence in Mogadishu claimed at least eight civilians today.

They were killed in a two hour crossfire between Somali government forces and Islamist insurgents with civilians cintinuing to flee the city.

Mogadishu reporter Mohamed Olad Hassan told us more.
