In a few hours time the International Criminal Court will rule on an appeal on whether the Sudanese President Omar al Bashir should face genocide charges.

In its ruling last year, the court rejected the charges, saying that the prosecutor failed to provide reasonable grounds to believe that Omar al Bashir had the specific intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa groups; but the ICC did issue an arrest warrant for war crimes and crimes against humanity allegedly committed in Darfur.

Many African and Arab states have supported President Bashir.

Alex de Vaal is the director of Justice Africa, a London based campaign group.

He's also been writing extensively on the conflict in Darfur and the issue of international justice.

On the line from New York, he hold Peter Ndoro about today's appeal case.
