Doctor Who baddies invade Salisbury

A shop in Salisbury currently boasts a display featuring replicas of Doctor Who's most fearsome foes! Also listen to an interview with Salisbury-born actor John Levene who appeared in the original series from 1969-75.

Magnet Stores in Fisherton Street, Salisbury has recently been invaded by two of the most fearsome alien foes from the Doctor Who universe.

Currently on display is a full-size Dalek replica and an authentic Cyberman suit. Visitors to the shop will also find a scale TARDIS Police Box replica model and a working model of time travelling dog K-9 will soon be joining them.

The replicas are all the work of local sci-fi fans and model makers Will Small and Richard Bradley.

Will said: "We got the plans for the TARDIS off the Internet and began work in April and have just finished it."

As for the impressive Dalek, Richard explained: "It's based on a 1966 episode called 'Evil of the Daleks'. We bought it partly finished and then completed the work.

"We took apart one of the toy Daleks you can buy - for the electronics. Then we fitted a couple of wheelchair motors and now we can remote control it."

As well as coming face to face with the TARDIS, Dalek and Cybeman models at the shop, local Doctor Who fans were able to meet an actor from the original series who paid a visit to Salisbury on the afternoon of Sunday 17th September to do a talk and sign autographs for aficionados.

Chris Hartin who manages the Magnet store explained John Levene's special connection with Salisbury. He said: "John is a local lad from Salisbury. He was born and bred in Salisbury over at Harnham."

BBC Radio Wiltshire's John Lyons recently chatted to John Levene about his Salisbury connection and his time on the show.
