Wimbledon serving up decades of greatness - 1990s

British number two Heather Watson is one of eight home-grown players announced as a Wimbledon wildcard.

The 19-year-old, who became the first British woman since 1994 to win a round at the French Open, is joined by former junior Wimbledon champion Laura Robson.

Naomi Broady, Katie O'Brien and Emily Webley-Smith were also given wildcards.

Britons James Ward, Daniel Cox and Daniel Evans have been handed entry into the men's side of the draw but Alex Bogdanovic misses out.

Bogdanovic will have to try to secure his place at Wimbledon via the qualifying tournament at Roehampton starting on Monday.

Teenager Oli Golding, the 17-year-old who reached the boys' singles semi-finals at Wimbledon last year, will also be competing in qualifying.

The world's top 100 players gain automatic entry into all Grand Slam tournaments, with Wimbledon beginning on 20 June.

That would ordinarily have guaranteed Watson's entry into the main women's draw but her jump from 117 to 93 in the rankings came after the Wimbledon cut-off point.

The Guernsey-born player defeated South Chanelle Scheepers, a South African ranked four places above her, on Monday to reach the second round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

And Ward, too, looks in good touch ahead of the All England Club Championship having beaten fourth seed Stanislas Wawrinka and defending champion Sam Querrey ton his way to the semi-finals of the Aegon Championship at Queen's.

He is the British number two behind Andy Murray but was ranked outside of the world's top 200 until his stunning success at Queen's.
