 Baghdatis needs to win the Paris title to qualify for Shanghai |
Marcos Baghdatis beat Tommy Robredo in the Paris Masters quarter-finals to end the Spaniard's hopes of qualifying for the season-ending Masters Cup. Robredo started the day in the eighth and last qualifying position in the race for Shanghai, but lost 6-4 6-4.
That meant that the winner of the later match between Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet was sure to overtake Robredo.
Gasquet won the match and will battle it out with Baghdatis for the final spot in Shanghai.
Gasquet will secure the place if he beats David Nalbandian in the semi-finals, but if he loses Baghdatis can leapfrog him by winning the tournament.
Mikhail Youzhny's hopes were ended earlier after the Russian lost 6-4 6-2 to Rafael Nadal.
Youzhny's defeat confirmed Fernando Gonzalez's place in Shanghai as he can drop no lower than eighth.
Nalbandian followed up his victory over Roger Federer with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (3-7) 6-2 win over Spanish fifth seed David Ferrer.
The Argentine now faces Gasquet, with Nadal and Baghdatis contesting the other semi-final.
