Bromsgrove stay fourth in the table |
Bromsgrove took the honours in a hard-fought Worcestershire derby in National Division Three Midlands by beating Malvern 23-10 at home. A poor kick by Malvern was returned well by Bromsgrove who cut through the covering defence to hand scrum half Ben Newman a try, converted by Ben Copson. Malvern hit back when Tom Hale made a break, and number eight James Martin was on hand to power over. Bromsgrove soon went ahead again with a penalty from Copson. Adam Dixon with a penalty again put Malvern level, but on the stroke of half time Bromsgrove won a scrum and a break saw Toby Wilson cross the line. Copson's 47th minute penalty stretched the lead to eight points as the home side slowly gained the advantage. The game was finally sealed when another Malvern clearance failed to find touch, the ball was run across the field and flanker Chris Macgregor was on hand to score the final try. Malvern director of rugby Dave Robins told BBC Hereford and Worcester he was bitterly disappointed by the result: "Our pack totally dominated a larger and heavier unit once more for the whole of the first half. "We gifted Bromsgrove two tries with some poor clearance kicking, which seems to be a trend in the modern game. "The insistence on copying international players with aerial ping-pong tactics generally doesn't work at our level, and gives opposition backs the chance to run back." Hereford's game against Luctonians was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
