According to the Daily Mirror, Michael Essien's knee injury means West Ham midfielder Scott Parker could make a shock return to Stamford Bridge and Blackburn could make a move for Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, possibly offering defender Christopher Samba in a swap deal.

2333:Reuters reports that three-time Super Bowl-winning offensive linebacker Mike Vrabel, 35, is retiring from the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs to join the coaching staff of Ohio State University.

2320: Tottenham will turn down an improved bid from Chelsea for Luka Modric if the west London side renew their efforts to sign the Croatian midfielder.

2306: Manchester United boss Sir Alex Fergusonon the possibility of Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger keeping French midfielder Samir Nasri at the Emirates until the end of his contract in 12 months time: "That is his decision," said Ferguson. "He is the manager. If he stands by that decision, it is a brave one. I don't know if the [Arsenal] directors will enjoy that one, but it is possible. Maybe he will have to stay."

2244: Press Association Sport understands that Brazilian side Corinthians have made an offer of 40m euros for Manchester City's unsettled striker Carlos Tevez. Unsettled Tevez wants to leave City after two years with the club and has cited family reasons, saying last week that he wants to be closer to his two children and their mother who live in Argentina.

2235: Russian cyclist Alexandr Kolobnev, who has been thrown out of this year's Tour de France after failing a doping test, will be sacked by his Katusha team and fined five times his salary if his 'B' sample also tests positive.

2231: Speaking at a media conference in Boston at the start of Manchester United's US tour, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson claims Samir Nasri has agreed to leave Arsenal but not to move to Old Trafford. "I don't think he is coming to United," said Ferguson. "That is all I can tell you. I think that he has agreed to go somewhere else."

2228: BBC F1's commentary box producer Mark Hughes feels Fernando Alonso's impressive victory in the British GP was not just down to the change in rules introduced for the weekend. Hughes says Ferrari's competitive leap forward was more to do with a major development they introduced on their car at Silverstone: "The exhaust has been re-positioned, the upper bodywork at the rear extensively re-profiled, there is a new rear wing and floor. In effect, it is a B-spec evolution of the original car."

2220: Team Sky principal Dave Brailsford refuses to rule out legal action after a member of his team, Juan Antonio Flecha, was wiped out by a television car during the ninth stage of the Tour de France on Sunday. "There are different options available, but [we'll wait] until we've got the facts and got the lawyers to say 'you could do this', 'Team Sky could do that', 'Juan as an individual might want to do that'," Brailsford explained. "We need to have a clear picture of what those options are before we then decide which one we may or may not wish to pursue."

2216: Qatar's World Cup chief mounts a vigorous defence of the Gulf state's right to host the 2022 tournament. Fifa's decision to award Qatar the World Cup has been mired by allegations of corruption but the Supreme Committee For The 2022 World Cup's general secretary, Hassan al Thawadi, tells BBC Sport: "The Qatar bid did not do anything wrong." 2205: Sky Sports News report that Chelsea have made a new £27m bid for Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric. The Blues had a £22m bid for the 25-year-old Croatian international rejected last month.

The "whistleblower" behind a series of corruption allegations involving Fifa executive committee members and Qatar's 2022 World Cup bid has told the BBC she fabricated the claims.

2156: Leeds United chairman Ken Bates pays tribute to long-serving club president Lord Harewood following his death at the age of 88. George Lascelles, the seventh Earl of Harewood and a first cousin of the Queen, was due to mark 50 years as Leeds president later this year, and the club were planning celebrations to recognise his service. He was also a former president of the Football Association, from 1963 to 1972. Bates told his club's website: "Although he was royalty, he always treated me as an equal and I feel like I have lost a true friend."

2148: Russian cyclist Alexandr Kolobnev has been thrown out of this year's Tour de France after failing a doping test. "We have decided with the agreement of the rider that he will be no longer with us on the Tour," Katusha sporting director Sergei Kunitchev told Reuters. Kolobnev, who has also been sacked by his team, was lying 69th in the overall standings, 22 minutes and 15 seconds behind leader Thomas Voeckler.

2142: League One side Huddersfield Town sign Bolton Wanderers winger Danny Ward for an undisclosed fee on a three-year contract. The 19-year-old had a successful loan stint with the Terriers at the end of last season.

2125: Several England players hit back at Hope Powell after their coach accused some of them of "cowardice" ahead of the Women's World Cup quarter-final penalty shootout. Midfielder Jill Scott Tweets: "You win as a team, you lose as a team. And defender Casey Stoney tells 5 live: "I don't think anyone's a coward and that's not the impression got from Hope when she debriefed us after the game. She said she was very proud and we should hold our heads up high."
