Paul Leeman was sent-off for two yellows card offences |
Paul Leeman said the referee was wrong to show him two yellow cards and send him off in the Champions League defeat to Shelbourne in Dublin. Leeman was dismissed for handball which led to a penalty in Shels' 4-1 win.
"It was ball to hand. It is difficult to get out of the way of a shot from five yards," said the Glens skipper.
"The penalty being awarded I can understand, but for the booking I thought the referee should have shown a bit of common-sense."
That penalty, scored by Jason Byrne, put Shelbourne 2-1 up and they went on to complete a 6-2 aggregate success.
"Overall, Shelbourne were the better side and deserved to go through," admitted Leeman.
"It is difficult because they are well into their season and full-time training is a massive advantage for them."
Glentoran manager Roy Coyle said the penalty incident had been the turning point.
"Who knows what would have happened if that had not gone against us because
we had got it back to 1-1 and they might have started getting a bit nervous, but
their confidence came back when they went 2-1 ahead," said Coyle.
"But you have to be honest and over two games they played well and probably
deserved to go through."
