Scarborough Corinthians juniors win regional award

Scarborough Corinthians Junior Football Club have won the regional FA Community Award in the Charter Standard Development Category.

The region extends from Northumberland to Sheffield, and they will now be entered for the National Award.

Corinthians secretary Kev Smith told BBC Radio York: "Our strong point as a club is that we try to give all children a chance to play.

"We have seven boys teams, two girls teams and a junior disability side."

Smith says the girls and disability teams bring geographical problems, which means a lot of travelling.

"There were never many (Scarborough girls) teams to play, so we entered the girls into the City of York girls football league where there are nine teams," he said.

"We are the only club in the area to have a disability team. We held some sessions in the special schools in Scarborough, and out of that we got a squad together.

"We've been running it for three years. There are not many matches for the lads, unfortunately, but we have travelled and we have played in mini-tournaments.

"We need more, bigger, facilities, but we are proud of what we've got.

"We think we try to do things correctly and it seems to be showing in getting nominated for awards and a lot of children want to come and play for our club."
