    Relief for Jessica Bouzas Maneiro!

The Spaniard gets up and running after an error-strewn game out of seemingly nowhere from Aryna Sabalenka. Just a blip?

  2. Medvedev levelspublished at 11:30 BST

    Medvedev 2-6 6-1 Walton

Despite basically standing in the front row of the stands to return serve, Daniil Medvedev has broken Adam Walton's serve twice to put himself within touching distance of leveling the match.

Medvedev briefly finds himself 0-40 down in his first go at serving for the set - however, the sixth seed reels off five points in a row, including the most awkward-looking drop shot you could hope to see, to take it.

    *Sabalenka 4-0 Bouzas Maneiro

That shows you just how high Aryna Sabalenka's standards are.

The world number one is clearly keen to spend as little time as possible out in the baking heat and lets out a groan as she misses a first break point for a 4-0 lead.

But a double fault from her opponent on the next puts her in total control.

    Sabalenka 3-0 Bouzas Maneiro*

24 of Sabalenka's 27 wins this season have been in straight sets.

She is the player with the most main draw matches won in two sets so far this season.

This is already looking fairly ominous for Jessica Bouzas Maneiro. Can the Spaniard gain a foothold in this first set?

After coming through qualifying to make his Grand Slam singles main draw debut, Britain’s Toby Samuel lost to Australian eighth seed Alex de Minaur.

There was better news for fellow Briton Katie Boulter, whoovercame Akasha Urhobo in three sets.

Stan Wawrinka said farewell to Roland Garros in the first round, losing to Jesper de Jong in four sets.

Czech Jiri Lehecka was Monday's biggest casualty in the men’s draw, with the 12th seed losing in straight sets to Pablo Carreno Busta, but Ben Shelton and Casper Ruud were among the seeds to progress.

In the women's draw, four-time champion Iga Swiatek lost just three games as she crushed Australian teenager Emerson Jones, while second seed Elena Rybakina was similarly ruthless in a 6-2 6-2 win over Veronika Erjavec.

Seventh seed Elina Svitolina fought back from a set down to beat Anna Bondar, while Amanda Anisimova,Jasmine Paolini and Elise Mertens also advanced.

Aryna Sabalenka recorded her best French Open run last year - but it ultimately ended in heartbreak as she lost out to American Coco Gauff in the final.

The Belarusian begins her latest campaign today against Spanish world number 50 Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, having made at least the semi-finals in 12 of her past 13 slam appearances (and reaching the quarter-finals at the other).

Only once before has the women's top seed fallen in the opening round at Roland Garros - when Angelique Kerber lost in 2017.

    Medvedev 2-6 2-1 Walton*

Play has already started on the outer courts - and sixth seed Daniil Medvedev looks hot and bothered as he trails Australian wildcard Adam Walton.

Medvedev has had a mixed relationship with Roland Garros, having gone out in the first round six times in nine previous appearances.

He's also nought for five on break points, which hasn't improved his mood.
