Hewett and Reid secure sixth US Open doubles title

British duo Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid came from a set and a break down to win the men's wheelchair doubles title for the sixth time as a partnership at the US Open.

Five years on from their most recent title at Flushing Meadows, the legendary pair battled back to beat Spain's Martin de la Puente and Ruben Spaargaren of the Netherlands 2-6 6-3 10-7 in a match tie-break.

It is a remarkable 30th Grand Slam doubles title for 34-year-old Reid, 11 years on from the Scot's first, with 26 of them coming alongside Hewett.

"We've not won here for five years so this is something we've been desperate for and highly motivated for," Hewett, 28, said.

"It won't be the last, we've got plenty more doubles to play in the future.

"These are the sort of matches we want to play in front of such an amazing crowd. I'm glad we could put on a bit of a show for you tonight."

Reid added: "It's been more than 13 years we've been playing together and he's not sick of me yet. Hopefully we've got a few more years left in us."

The title looked a long way off as top seeds Hewett and Reid struggled in the first set, losing six games in a row after going up 2-0 early.

De le Puente and Spaargaren kept the pressure up in the second and looked in control after breaking to lead 3-2.

However, Hewett and Reid hit back immediately and the momentum of the match switched in an instant.

The British duo took four consecutive games to win the set and force the 10-point match tie-break.

It went back and forth in the early stages but Hewett and Reid opened up a gap to lead 7-4 and despite a double fault from Hewett at 8-6, they kept their composure to seal their third major win of 2026.

Earlier, Hewett booked his place in the men's wheelchair singles final. The second seed was leading 6-0 3-0 when Argentina's Gustavo Fernandez retired injured.

He will face defending champion and top seed Tokito Oda of Japan, who has won the previous three majors in 2026 and is going for the calendar Grand Slam.

Meanwhile, Briton Matthew Knoesen had a day to remember as he won both the junior boys wheelchair singles and doubles titles.

The singles crown was claimed with a 6-0 6-2 win over Australia's Sonny Rennison, while Knoesen partnered with Hirofumi Inoue of Japan to win the doubles title - they beat fellow Briton Will Barton and Italy's Lorenzo Politano 6-1 6-0.
