Walshe wins gold as McSharry takes silver at Europeans

Ireland's Ellen Walshe secured a gold medal at the European Aquatic Championships in Paris on Wednesday, and Mona McSharry a silver, but Daniel Wiffen found himself out of the medals.

Walshe delivered an outstanding performance to win the women's 400m individual medley, recovering from a deficit to take victory in a time of 4:34.42.

Great Britain's Amalie Smith was second, with Poland's Justina Anna Kozan finishing in the bronze medal position.

Earlier McSharry has picked up a silver medal in the women's 100m breaststroke.

McSharry recorded a time of 1:05.41 to take her place on the second step of the podium and add to the Olympic bronze medal she won in Paris in 2024.

"I was just so focused on putting on a good race and on my own plan. You can't be any happier than recording a personal best," said McSharry after her final.

Angharad Evans of Great Britain was the gold medallist in 1:04.87, a new championship record.

Daniel Wiffen missed out on a medal in the men's 800m freestyle final, coming home fourth in 7:43.30.

John Shortt was seventh in the men's 200m backstroke final, with a time of 1:55.86.

Danielle Hill has qualified for the women's 50m backstroke final, which takes place on Thursday.
