Former Wales scrum-half Gareth Davies is set for another season of professional rugby after signing a new one-year deal with Scarlets.

After making his Scarlets debut in 2009, the fresh contract will take him into a 19th season in Llanelli over a club career in which he has scored 77 tries in 281 appearances.

Davies, 35, has not featured much in the second half of the current campaign but will continue to compete with Archie Hughes and Dane Blacker for the scrum-half shirt.

"I still feel good physically, love playing for this club and feel I have a lot to offer," said Davies.

"This place means a huge amount to me. I've spent my whole professional career here, shared some unbelievable memories with team-mates, staff and supporters and I'm excited to be in the heart of it for another season."

'Talents that you can't coach'

Davies, who will turn 36 in August, retired from the international scene in October 2024 after scoring 17 tries in 77 internationals.

He played in three World Cups, won a Grand Slam in 2019 and a Six Nations two years later.

Davies was also part of the British and Irish Lions tour party in Australia in 2017 and South Africa four years later.

He is the top Welsh try scorer in United Rugby Championship (URC) history with 58 and joint third in the overall list, with only Irish duo Tommy Bowe (67) and Craig Gilroy (59) above him.

"Gareth represents so much of what this Scarlets is about," said Scarlets interim director of rugby Nigel Davies.

"I remember him coming into the environment as a 17-year-old kid with unbelievable pace, confidence and energy.

"Even then, there was something different about him. He had an instinct for the game you can't coach.

"To now see him going into a 19th season at his home club says everything about his character, professionalism and love for Scarlets."
