St Helens have confirmed Jake Wingfield has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury and will miss the rest of the season.

Wingfield, 22, was hurt during the first half of the Betfred Challenge Cup quarter-final win over Catalans Dragons on Friday at the BrewDog Stadium.

The versatile forward feared the worst and had scans over the weekend, which have revealed he has ruptured his ligament.

Wingfield will have surgery and will not play again until next year.

Saints head coach Paul Rowley told the club website: "For such a professional, hard-working young man, it's gutting news, and we know he deserves so much better than this news.

"He's a fantastic lad who we love, and we'll make sure our medical staff and more will support him."
