Sunday's Diamond League meeting in Paris will go ahead in an adapted format after local police asked for all sporting events to be cancelled because of extreme heat.

Wednesday was the country's hottest day on record, according to Meteo-France, with an average national temperature of 30C.

Emergency "red alert" measures have been implemented in the French capital, with a high of 39C having been forecast for Paris on Saturday and 32C on Sunday.

On Friday, Paris police issued a statement "prohibiting all sporting competitions and events in Paris" and warned organisers that "should they refuse, the Prefect of Police will prohibit them by decree".

The Diamond League has now issued a statement saying that the Paris Police Prefecture has agreed for the event to go ahead with an adjusted schedule, while "an exceptional set of measures has been put in place to mitigate the effects of the extreme heat".

Sunday's meeting at Stade Charlety will only feature competitions involving professional athletes. All activities for athletics clubs and licensed members, as well as regional competitions, have been cancelled.

  2. How does the Diamond League work?published at 12:33 BST 28 June

The Diamond League - athletics' premier one-day meeting series - consists of 15 stops, this year culminating in a two-day final in Brussels in September.

Athletes compete for points across 32 Diamond League disciplines at the 14 regular series meetings in a bid to qualify for the finals.

The top six athletes in field events, top eight in track events from 100m up to 800m, and top 10 in distances from 1500m upwards, will qualify for the finals.

The finals, which precede the inaugural season-ending World Athletics Ultimate Championship, are a winner-takes-all showdown to be crowned Diamond League champion in each event.

After her shock second-place finish in Stockholm, Britain's Olympic 800m champion Keely Hodgkinson will next race at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene.

Training partner Georgia Hunter Bell and reigning world 800m champion Lilian Odira will also compete at the Prefontaine Classic as the three medallists from last year's World Championships in Tokyo are reunited.

Hodgkinson, whose defeat by Switzerland's Audrey Werro came in her first 800m of the outdoor season, hopes to be ready to beat the long-standing women's 800m world record at the London Diamond League meeting on 18 July.

Josh Kerr has also announced he will attempt to break the long-standing men's mile world record on the same day.

The London Athletics Meet will be a key date in the diary of many British stars, with a women's 200m showdown between relay team-mates Hunt, Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita among the other standout events.
