Even if Barry doesn't score, you can't doubt his effort. He gets properly stuck in.

What a tackle from James Tarkowski!

The Everton defender makes a stunning, last-ditch challenge to block William Osula's shot as he races through on goal.

Osula is down receiving treatment in the aftermath of Tarkowski's tackle.

As our highest paid player, and knowing that we have a thin squad, Grealish should hang his head in shame if he’s not turned up for training. Disgraceful, selfish behaviour.

There has been a real lack of quality in this game so far.

After beating Arsenal on Tuesday night, I bet Fleetwood Town are rubbing their hands at the prospect of facing either side.

Hayden Hackney looks as though he is about to roll the ball into an empty net from inside the area after Tyrique George's effort takes a deflection and causes a scramble in the box.

But once again, Dan Burn is there to hack the ball clear.

Tyler Dibling - who started the win over Wolves in the last round - wins a corner for Everton.

However, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's delivery is cleared away by Dan Burn.

Much respect to both sides for putting out full-strength XIs. Giving the competition respect by treating it as something worth winning. Would be great to see either of them do it.

Vitaliy Mykolenko picks out an unmarked Hayden Hackney in the penalty area, but the midfielder completely fluffs his lines and fails to make a solid connection with the ball.

That was easily Everton's best chance of the game so far.

  10. Everton have 'struggled to score a lot of goals'published at 20:04 GMT

I think with Thierno Barry scoring three goals in the Premier League this season but they have struggled to score a lot of goals. There is the expectation that Everton are aggressive and front footed in the way they play, but they are very pragmatic under David Moyes.

Of course the fans want to see more goals.

Jordan Pickford is called into action twice in as many minutes.

First, the England international just about deals with a wide effort from Joe Willock before palming Fabian Schar's long-range strike behind for a corner moments later.

The resulting corner is eventually cleared by Everton, but Newcastle are growing in confidence.

    Newcastle should do better!

The Magpies catch Everton wide open on the break and, after the ball is squared across the area to Jacob Murphy, it pinballs around the box before Jordan Pickford can pounce on it.

That was a really good opportunity for Newcastle to punish the home side.

Newcastle's first real chance of the game falls to Harvey Barnes after a raking pass into the box from Nico Gonzalez.

The former Leicester City forward's header was well saved by Jordan Pickford.

Fabian Schar is walking gingerly after being clipped by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

The Newcastle defender seems OK to carry on, but it's one we'll keep an eye on over the next couple of minutes.

  16. 'Up and down' start for Jaissle in chargepublished at 19:55 GMT

    Everton 0-0 Newcastle

It's been up and down for Matthias Jaissle since he started, but he knows he needs more time to work with the players.

He came in during preseason and took over very quickly from Eddie Howe. They started on the front foot. They had a couple of wins and couple of losses, and I think that loss against Coventry was heightened because Coventry being a newly promoted team, even though they are an exellent side under Frank Lamapard.

I think this game tonight is massive for both teams, but I think it's huge for Jaissle to earn another feather in his cap.

Jacob Ramsey tries to launch Newcastle's first attack of the night, threading a pass through to William Osula.

The pass has too much on it and, in the end, is easy enough for Jordan Pickford to clean up.

I think this game is absolutely massive for Everton in terms of the fan base and the club.

This is my second time at the Hill Dickinson stadium and it feels like they need a big cup run to ignite the sense of back to Everton's old mentality.

It's a huge stadium, huge club, with a terrifically loyal fan base, and I can't help look at it from a fan's angle and think this is so important for them and David Moyes tonight.

Everton have made a strong start in the opening couple of minutes.

The home side have already had a couple of shots, albeit from distance, and won a corner.

It is an opening that will have impressed David Moyes.
