Gavin Cowan has signed a new contract to stay as head coach of Shrewsbury Town until at least the summer of 2028.

The 44-year-old took over from Michael Appleton at the end of January with Salop in a relegation battle and ultimately steered them to safety after winning five of his first seven matches.

The former Shrewsbury defender had been in talks with the club over a new two-year deal for the last week and said he felt "ecstatic" at getting it sorted.

"It's great to get the extension because it helps secure some roots into what we want to do," he told the club's website., external

"You don't want to be living on a knife edge all the time. It just brings a lot of clarity around the day-to-day operations of being the first-team manager.

"From my perspective, it means I can really focus on recruitment. Having that extra year gives us a solid foundation to work from."

Along with Cowan's new deal, assistants Dave Edwards and Jamie Haynes have also agreed new contracts, something the head coach described as "hugely important".

"We want to get on with things. We are doers. We want to get on and do the work," he said.

"Now that the operational side is close to where we want it, we can focus on the smaller details - from managing staff and keeping them on board, to improving things in the changing room and making sure everything is right for the players at the training ground and around the stadium.

"A lot of that work had already started."
