West Ham rout among 'lowest points' for Wrexham boss

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson admitted the 6-0 thrashing by West Ham United was among the lowest points of his time at the club.

The visitors were outclassed by a rampant West Ham at London Stadium on Friday.

It was Wrexham's heaviest league defeat in 22 years, since losing by the same margin at Bournemouth in 2004.

Parkinson said everyone had to take ownership of the performance, including himself.

"We're going to make sure we have that accountability as individuals and as staff," Parkinson said.

"We'll respond and we've got to put the ingredients back in place very quickly to put in a better performance than we did.

"[This] is the first night where we looked like we had a soft centre when it really mattered most and we've got to rediscover that.

"Everyone thinks it's been a complete bed of roses since I've been here [but] we've had other days that have been really, really tough.

"We've had setbacks and each season I've been here we've had periods where it's not been going well and from the outside the team can look a little lost.

"And then we've rediscovered what we're all about as a side.

"We've got to find a way back and give ourselves a chance. We need to show more character and resilience."

Jarrod Bowen scored his sixth goal of the season to set West Ham on their way to an impressive win that sent them back to the Championship summit.

Joel Piroe, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Taty Castellanos, Mohamadou Kante and Manor Solomon were also all on target for the Hammers.

It was bitterly disappointing for Wrexham in front of the biggest crowd they have appeared before.

"We came up against an exceptional front line tonight," Parkinson added.

"But equally in that first half those two goals – those two moments – we could have dealt with so much better.

"To come to a place like this with a team full of confidence you've got to defend with a lot more resilience and more tenacity in key moments than we did tonight.

"In the first 25 minutes there wasn't a great deal in the game and we got in some great positions.

"But the very basics of defending came up short and if you know where you need to be in those moments teams like West Ham are going to punish you.

"Part of me respects they are a good team, but we played Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, Coventry in the National League and Sheffield United and given a better account of ourselves in those games than we did tonight."
