Out of form Guernsey FC lose at AFC Varndeanians

Injury-hit Guernsey FC suffered a fourth successive defeat in all competitions as they lost 1-0 at AFC Varndeanians in the Southern Combination Premier Division.

Guernsey missed a golden chance to take a fifth-minute lead when Ross Allen had a penalty saved after Dylan Graham had been tripped in the box.

Allen glanced a header wide moments later while Will Fazakerley had a 25th-minute goal-bound strike from the edge of the area blocked.

Allen went close soon after the commencement of the second half while Seb Shepperd did well to save from a home chance soon after.

Sheppard was again needed to keep the islanders in it as he did well to save from Morris Dench with 20 minutes to go.

Graham saw a 76th-minute header tipped over the bar and Guernsey were made to pay for their missed chances as the hosts got the only goal three minutes later, when Aiden Eckworth stabbed the ball home after Guernsey failed to clear a ball into the box.

The loss extended Guernsey's winless record to five games - they last tasted victory on 22 August when they won 1-0 at Roffey.

"I thought the second half we were terrible," Guernsey FC manager Tony Vance told BBC Radio Guernsey.

"First half I thought we were brilliant, should have been out of sight - we had them on the ropes and the only thing we weren't was ruthless and there was no end product.

"People started getting a little bit ahead of themselves and enjoying the fact that we were so on top and probably forgetting about the fact that we've got to go and score a goal.

"It was an outstanding performance but without the end product, and I said after about 10 or 15 minutes we're going to rue missing these chances."
