Will Guehi experiment become a long-term fix?

Enzo Maresca might have been expected to keep his head down and not make any curious team selections in his first Premier League game in charge of Manchester City.

Instead, he made the surprising decision to field Marc Guehi in a holding role and, eventually, the gamble paid off - as discussed on Match of the Day above.

The Guehi experiment may end up being a long-term fix, with Maresca saying afterwards he provides "a solution" in the middle of the park.

Maresca had started Mateo Kovacic on the bench, so was the Italian boss sending some sort of message to those in the corridors of power at City?

The former Chelsea manager replaced the legendary Pep Guardiola in the summer and has not hidden his desire for the club to bring in new signings before the end of the transfer window on 1 September.

Just 50 minutes before kick-off on Sunday, BBC Sport reported that City had agreed an £86m fee to sign midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille - but Maresca said he had no idea about the deal as he has not yet spoken to the decision-makers

At just 18, the Moroccan sensation has a massive price tag on his head and has huge boots to fill at City following the departure of 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri to Barcelona, as well as Tijjani Reijnders heading off to Saudi Arabia.

Bouaddi will play in the pivot alongside record signing Elliot Anderson, who played an hour on his Premier League debut for City and showed glimpses of what he will bring to the side, covering plenty of ground and often snuffing out the danger.

But Sunday's surprise midfield partner Guehi showcased his versatility by scoring the 10th Premier League goal of his career with an 84th-minute header.

Overall, Guehi won all three of his tackles - more than any other player on the pitch - while also managing a 94.9% pass completion from 59 attempts and winning eight of his 11 duels.

Asked where he will play next week, Guehi jested: "Who knows? Maybe up front. We'll see."

Former City goalkeeper Joe Hart added: "City look OK. It's obviously interesting when they have had such settled world-class players that they have almost mixed and matched.

"Anderson and Guehi is an interesting one in midfield but that won't be a long-term thing, especially with Bouaddi coming in. With people coming back late from the World Cup, Maresca is just trying out things in-season, in-game.

"That's just where Manchester City are at the moment. They've completely changed everything about themselves but they're still expected to win."
