Wrexham hunt quality to end tough transfer window

Wrexham chief executive Mike Williamson says their relatively quiet transfer window is a result of now competing against bigger clubs for top-level talent.

The Red Dragons have added three recruits for the Championship promotion push, which has started with 1-1 draws against Cardiff City and Watford.

Last summer Wrexham signed 13 players – and brought in three more in January – to help them go close to making the play-offs on their return to the second tier.

"Going into the transfer market this summer we said we would look to add some quality, not quantity," Williamson told Radio Wales Sport before Saturday's draw against the Hornets.

"We have the foundations of a really strong Championship squad, so knew what we needed to be competitive and make a bit of a difference."

Phil Parkinson has brought in goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, wing-back Danny Imray and midfielder Ben Whiteman but would like to do more business before the window closes on Tuesday, 1 September.

"We've been going after it but what happens is that the players we are after are top-quality players," continued Williamson.

"It's about finding that quality and there are a few more pieces we want to bring in, but at times we are competing against some other big clubs out there.

"It's not just the Premier League and top-end Championship clubs but those in the top five of leagues around Europe.

"That's who Wrexham are today – we are not looking to bring in just an average player, we are looking to bring in players who are recruited at the very top level."

Kieffer Moore has led the line in Wrexham's two Championship fixtures with Sam Smith coming off the bench.

Williamson confirmed that they are working to give Parkinson more firepower.

He said: "There are probably 72 other clubs looking for the same shiny new striker, right?

"That's the challenging one to find – the striker who is great with his feet, great with his head, great at hold-up play, great at finishing, is 6ft5ins and wants to move to Wrexham.

"That's your £40m striker right there, but we have two great strikers on the pitch right now.

"We are comfortable with those two guys up top and what we need to just add is quality with a couple of different pieces on the pitch to give them the opportunity to score more goals."

Wrexham host Birmingham on Friday, 28 August (20:00 BST) and travel to Millwall the day after the transfer window shuts.
