Former Middlesbrough and Sunderland midfielder Lee Cattermole has been named as the new manager of Gateshead.
Cattermole, 38, has signed a two-year deal to replace Rob Elliot, who left to become the new Carlisle United boss.
"Lee brings with him the experience gained from over 250 games in the Premier League, where he worked with some of the most respected managers in world football, including Martin O'Neill and Gareth Southgate," interim chairman Graeme Wood told the club's website., external
The Tyneside club finished 18th in the National League last season, eight points clear of the relegation zone after a strong finish to the campaign.
Cattermole has had coaching roles with Boro, Burnley, Bristol Rovers and Northern Ireland, but this will be his first as a head coach.
The Teesside-born player retired in 2020 after a brief spell in the Netherlands, but he has been waiting for a chance like this.
"When you go into coaching or management, you've got to decide where you feel you're going to be best suited and I've been clear that I want to be a manager," he said.
"It's something I've made clear from the outset that I want to do. It's here now and I'm excited for the challenge."
