Fenton John has signed a two-year contract extension at Gateshead, which will keep the midfielder at the National League club until 2028.

The 22-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough campaign for The Heed last season, making 47 appearances in all competitions.

The club have also taken up the one-year options in the contracts of defenders David Ferguson and Brad Nicholson, and goalkeeper Adam Desbois.

But Max Melbourne, Carter Milmore, George Shelvey, Oli Thompson and Connor Pani will be released, with the latter supported in his rehabilitation from a ruptured Achilles tendon injury.

Gateshead are currently without a manager after Rob Elliot left the role following a successful stint in charge where he helped the club avoid relegation.

He was appointed as Carlisle boss the day after his Gateshead departure was announced.
