    Sonny Baker looks every bit an England cricketer.

    I thought Matt Fisher offered control. I was a bit surprised when he came around the wicket at the start. I would've thought over the wicket would've made more sense. Excellent against right handers, needs some work against the lefties.

  3. 'Super, super exciting'

    England Test debutant, Sonny Baker, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "It was hard work. At the start the bounce was more tennis ball-y. Eventually we found our way there. A bit of a graft tomorrow, hopefully we can get through them and I can put my feet up for two days."

    On his wicket: "It's probably obvious how I felt at the time. Super, super exciting. I was desperate to get on the board. Had my first over to get into it a bit. My rhythm felt a little bit better in my second spell. Good catch from Bethell."

    "Daryl is a decent player of the short ball but it's worth changing it up, especially if you've got a bit of air speed. Hopefully, we can finish them off tomorrow and go from there."

    On getting the call-up: "I thought I might be in with a sniff. Ollie Robinson is out, I thought I was in with a chance, I've no idea though, I'm not a selector. I found out a few days before, I could sort out tickets, they can be a nightmare, and then I could mentally prepare myself."

    I think New Zealand looked rusty. It could've been worse, it just doesn't feel quite like it's running for them at the moment.

    The highlight for England was that spell of Archers. His release point varied, it looked like eh was trying to get some reverse swing with the low release point. Maybe he's learnt a few new tricks in the IPL. But that battle win him and Phillips is what it's all about. Archer was so hostile with it.

    'I think he enjoyed that!' - Baker takes his first Test wicket

    England seamer Sonny Baker speaking to Sky Sports: "It was awesome to make my debut. A great experience all round and I was so happy to my first wicket as you could tell from the celebration.

    "I was trying not to get emotional with getting the cap beforehand - I gave my mum and dad a hug and it properly got me.

    "Test cricket is hard work. It was good graft today but looking forward to getting back tomorrow. The wicket was a little bit tennis-bally at the start and we beat the bat a bit. Hopefully they won't get much more than 300."

  6. 291-7 is a reasonable position for New Zealand to be in having been put into bat.

    The tourists may well be rueing the number of wickets they threw away on day one - five of their top six were dismissed for between 24 and 51, with some pretty poor shots attached to a number of those dismissals.

    Two wickets apiece for Sonny Baker and Jacob Bethell, while Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue and Matthew Fisher removed one batter each.

    I think England will be delighted. Having won the toss, there was a bit of movement out there, not a great bit though. New Zealand did gift England a few with some soft dismissals. I think New Zealand in the dressing room will be thinking how has no one managed to put up a really big score.

    England with a brand new attack, a few debutants, they've done really well.

    Jacob Bethell switches ends to replace Jofra Archer and bowl the final over of the day.

    Glenn Phillips takes a single off the first ball of the over and can't back on strike - he'll be on 49 overnight.

    The players walk off - a pretty even day, all told, but I suspect New Zealand will be marginally the happier.

    Kyle Jamieson isn't afraid to take Josh Tongue on.

    He skies a top edge into the leg side, with the ball landing safely between a pair of fielders.

    Having taken two there, he carves a boundary through a big gap at cover.

    The gigantic tailender then backs away to flail at the final ball of the over - one on the stumps would have cleaned him up.

  10. Glenn Phillips is OK to continue.

    He's at the non-striker's end as Josh Tongue lines up to pepper Kyle Jamieson.

    He's got quite a lot to aim at.

    What a spell this has been from Archer. It's like a switch has been flicked. He's bowled a terrific spell here, it's been fast, it's been aggressive. Some ugly balls that Phillips has had to dive out of the way of.

    Phillips has evaded yet another horrible, horrible bouncer. I don't know how many times he's ended up on his bottom as a result of Archer.

    It's been gutsy stuff from Phillips.

    Nicely done by Glenn Phillips, getting his bat under Jofra Archer's first delivery to ramp it for four - that takes him to 48.

    A few balls later and he's on the deck again, sprawling away from an Archer short ball that would have sent his helmet grille flying to somewhere near fine leg had it made contact.

    Archer completes the over by landing on Phillips' glove - the physio is coming on to take a look.

    The only good thing about that was the catch. I've enjoyed the cricket today, it's been of a good standard. That was not a good standard.

    Smith was being too careful with that. Really, he could've knocked it where ever he wanted.

    Jordan Cox makes good ground running back and takes the catch over his shoulder.

    Two wickets now for the part-timer, who's finding this pretty funny.
