So a disappointing afternoon for the Red Sox but the good news is the Atlanta Braves are now ahead against the Houston Astros, so the Red Sox might book a post-season place in the next hour or so despite that loss.

As for the Rays, they look like they are flying towards AL East title.

In the end not quite a perfect day for the Rays with that late Red Sox home run, but still pretty good.

They win it 5-1 with four runs in the first inning and a home run by Victor Meza Jr. in the fourth doing the damage.

The Rays are on the verge of winning the AL East title and the Red Sox have to wait to book their place in the post-season.

The Red Sox are finally on the board and might just have the tiniest glimmer of hope.

It comes from Trevor Story who tees off to left field to make it 5-1 and end the Rays shutout.

The Red Sox are down to their final three outs.

They need something very special here to turn this one around and secure their post-season place.

The Houston Astros are ahead in Atlanta as well, which means it's looking increasingly likely the Red Sox will have to wait another day to celebrate.

When you think Junior Caminero has been relatively quiet tonight it tells you how good this has been from the Rays.

But with 41 home runs this season you would expect him to play a big part in their post-season run.

The Red Sox have a chance to close the gap with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth inning.

For the first time Rays pitcher Griffin Jax is under serious pressure but he responds perfectly with a crucial strikeout of Roman Anthony to close out the inning.

That might be a key turning point in this game.

Things are looking good for the Rays so far this afternoon.

If they can hold on to win this game and the New York Yankees lose to the Arizona Diamondbacks later, the Rays will have the chance to win the title against the Yankees on Tuesday.

That would be quite a way to finish things off.

The Rays add to their lead with the first home run of the afternoon.

It comes from the bat of Victor Meza Jr., who hits his 14th home run of the season to centre field.

Meza Jr. knew it was gone as soon as it came off the bat and now the Rays have a 5-0 lead.

More problems for Sandoval and the Red Sox as the Rays' fast start gets even better.

A ground-ball single through right field from Chandler Simpson is enough for Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca to make it home for the Rays and give them a 4-0 lead.

The Red Sox are yet to wake up in St Petersburg.

The Rays have the bases loaded in the first inning as Red Sox pitcher Patrick Sandoval is already struggling.

An RBI double from Jonny DeLuca brings home Yandy Diaz and Ryan Vilade to give the Rays a 2-0 lead.

The Red Sox began the series with a 4-2 win on Friday thanks to home runs by Roman Anthony and Jahmai Jones.

But the Rays responded with a walk-off win on Saturday night as Riche Palacios' RBI single made it 2-1 at the bottom of the ninth.

It means the Red Sox can book their place in the play-offs with a win this afternoon or if the Houston Astros lose against the Atlanta Braves.

The Rays meanwhile are five games clear of the Yankees at the top of the division with eight games to play, and the Yankees face the Arizona Diamondbacks later this afternoon.
