Kirsty Gilmour has had to settle for silver five times at the European Badminton Championships. But her patience was rewarded on Sunday when she finally claimed continental gold in Spain.

The Scot beat Line Hojmark Kjaersfeldt of Denmark 21-17, 21-15 in Huelva to claim the title for the first time.

Gilmour, 32, lost the final in 2016, 2017, 2022, 2024 and - most recently - last year. She also had to settle for bronze in 2021.

But the world ranked 31 player belied her status as fifth seed this time to beat top-ranked Kjaersfeldt.
